Pumpkinhead II

Pumpkinhead II (1994) Rewatch: ❎

The first Pumpkinhead isn't exactly the greatest horror film, not even in the VHS tat stakes but its dusty, unsettling, willingnese to commit to witchy demomic, ugly, vengeance gives it its own gothic vibes and there's few films entirely like it. As a monster, Pumpkinhead is every bit as nifty as you'd expect from Stan Winston but for me, it's a film that makes more of its setting than it needs to and that's what makes it a joy.

So obviously none of that makes it into the sequel in any real way. Sure, you can tick off elements but where the first leans into its gothic weirdness, the second is really straightforward "cop investigatee monster killings" stuff. Thing is, it's pretty alright in straight to video terms, it's certainly had more care put in than many, but it never really comes together in the same way. Which is fine! Sometimes I want some desert hued strange happenings and sometimes I just want to see a rubber monster tear someone apart.

Given I've been really knackered the past few days, the straightforward straight to video inanity did me just fine. The kind of film you don't need to concentrate on or put much effort in with it at all is perfect for days like these and that's precisely what I got.
