Horror Rises From The Tomb (1973) Rewatch? ❎

No recollection of buying this but it’s clearly been there a while now, I assume I must have grabbed it whilst it was cheap one day. So, finally got round to watching it and yep, this is a film you cannot accuse of lacking in organ. It is jam packed full of organ. If ever you wanted a film that’s heavy on the sinister organ, this is it.

If it wasn’t for the gratuitous nudity, I’d have struggled to place this as made in 1973. It’s got one of those post hippy hangover vibes from the turn of the decade, with gore that Herschel Gordon Lewis would likely reject as too tatty. It’s an odd beast. A mix of gothic euro horror, exploitation, post hippy oddness and dudes dressing like they’re straight out of a Grattans catalogue, it rambles all over the place. There’s a bit of a slasher, black magic, a brief zombie interlude, possession, dour faced murders and bright, thick, colourful blood all to an organ heavy soundtrack.

I’m probably making this sound worse than it is. It’s not an especially good film and it really does ramble around rather than go in a straight line but there’s a couple of neat kills, the dubbing is passable (it’s no Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue), there’s a bit of rummaging in someone’s innards at one point and it could definitely give you Grattans menswear section fear for a decade or so. Oh, and it’s got plenty of old building and shrubbery stuff going on in between whatever other nonsense is happening. (Tits, it’s usually tits happening).

Not sure I’d make a date to watch it again but I certainly wouldn’t avoid it either.
