Devil Fish

Devil Fish / Monster Shark (1984) Rewatch: ❎

Wow, this film is absolute chaos. It bounces all over the shop with so much energy, it’s kind of overwhelming trying to keep up with what sort of film it wants to be. And I mean this in the most generous and complimentary way too. Whatever it doesn’t have in budget, script or acting, it more than makes up for in gusto.

Yeah, so, I really enjoyed this! Thanks to the almost scattershot editing it does sometimes get a blink and you miss it thing going on, luckily for me the good lord invented rewind so if I did miss something (this happened a few times because as usual, I was doodling at the same time) I can go back and find out what I missed. Hooray for technology!

I love me a film with a big rubber monster anyway, a big rubber monster that’s a murderous dinosaur shark with tentacles? Yeah, go on then. I’ll have some of that. I was a bit sad that the fish doesn’t make anywhere near enough appearances throughout but it is a corkingly daft looking thing gliding through the water and reader, I loved it. Extra points for having some tentacle scenes that were way, way better than some expensive films I’ve seen.

Sure, there was nowhere near enough of them but yeah, I could buy that people were being slapped about by a sea beast or some sort, not just holding a latex tentacle against themselves and gurning. Somewhere around the middle of the film I found myself impressed at the effort that had clearly gone in to making it look a bit slimey and ick during an assault on a boat. Yes, it’s incredibly cheap but really, good effort there. Very nice!

I was a little bit disappointed (really only a little bit) that much of the film was spent on why the beast and not fishy murderings but I guess the money only goes so far.

Whatever. It was a rollickingly bizarre ride into all the trappings of some quality and pretty exhaustive tat faves. There’s conspiracies, fish, talking computers, fish, mysterious murders, investigating scientists, fish, lots of people watching displays to save money, fish, weird dismembering, big monsters, fish and a boat. And fire! Can’t forget the burny!

Lovely stuff, thank you. Top tat. Thoroughly enjoyed.
