Technically, Xmas is for spooky ghost stories and Halloween is for stabbing, disembowlment and zombies in my books but I’ll take any opportunity to watch an interpretation of an MR James tale or five.
Not much to say about this, Robert Powell reads through five adaptations of some of the best MR James stories and he does so immaculately. Surprisingly, more so than the “sounds like it should be the best on paper” Christopher Lee who performed similar around the early two thousands.
The Mezzotint fares best for the 15 minute slot each adaptation gets but really, they’re all very very good. (Incidentally, the much more recent Ghost Stories For Christmas adaptation of The Mezzotint is lovely stuff, well worth a watch).
