Are You In The House Alone?

Are You In The House Alone? (1978) Rewatch? ❎

Didn’t really get on with this. A bit disappointing in a night where some brain-off TV movie nonsense would have been perfect too but alas, I just found it largely failing to hold my attention at all.

Just kind of all over the shop really and I think one of those where the usual TV movie preoccupations and stuff happening felt really incongruous given the sincerity it’s clearly trying to cling to. In fairness, the last five minutes do get the message across well enough, it’s just the last part of the film often feels like an entirely different film as it goes from meandering family drama to treatise on unfair justice for women in the most arse backwards way possible.

It might have felt less incongruous had the film committed to being a thriller of sorts, or somewhat leading towards having something to say at any point prior but as it’s content to do minor family and interpersonal drama much in the same way a thousand other TV movies do and only occasionally remember the story it’s trying to tell, any substance kinda comes out the blue.

I did like the photo stuff at the end though, clearly someone has a flare for doing this stuff well and it’s a good effort to salvage some tension and feeling from the mess. Can’t say I’ve ever felt compelled to read the book so no idea how well it compares but yeah, it ends up feeling diluted by virtue of being a TV movie and almost resentful in how it clearly could be more if only…
